Canine teeth are the pointy cornerstones of your mouth. Whenever someone comes into Envy Smile Dental with a blunt or chipped canine tip, they often wonder if tooth bonding is strong enough to hold up on an eye tooth.

A patient sat in my chair recently and asked: can tooth bonding fix canines, or will the tip just snap off the minute I chew food?

My answer was yes, tooth bonding can definitely fix canines, but your dentist has got to know your bite inside out.

Here is why: your canines are the heavy lifters of your jaw. When you slide your jaw left or right while chewing food, your top and bottom canines touch and slide against each other. This motion lifts your back molars apart so they do not grind together. Dentists call this canine guidance. That means canine tips take a lot of sideways friction.

If your canine tip has snapped off or worn down, I can easily rebuild that sharp corner using high-strength composite resin. But I spend a good ten minutes checking your chewing movement with blue carbon paper before you leave.

If I leave the bonded tip even a fraction too thick, your jaw will crash into it when you chew, and that fresh resin will ping right off. When it is balanced down to the micrometre, though, it holds up brilliantly.

People always ask how long bonded canines hold up. Most patients get five or six years before they need a quick polish to get rid of tea marks. If you happen to crack a corner on a stubborn pistachio nut, don’t sweat it. You just pop back into our chair, and we stick a fresh patch on in ten minutes flat.
