Why a Gap Can Appear at Age 7
At seven, your child is often somewhere in the middle of a big dental transition. A baby tooth may have fallen out while its adult replacement is still making its way through the gums. That temporary space can look strange for a while.
And sometimes the adult teeth simply don’t fill the available space yet. As the jaw develops, nearby teeth shift gradually. A gap that looks obvious today can become much less noticeable after more permanent teeth erupt.
Normal Tooth Changes
If the bottom front teeth are involved, timing matters. New adult teeth often have a different shape and size from the baby teeth they replace. Their position can change during eruption, too.
When the Gap Needs a Closer Look
• A loose baby tooth can leave a surprisingly obvious space, especially while the adult tooth is still hidden below.
• If one permanent tooth is missing from its expected position, the dentist will want to understand why rather than simply closing the gap.
• Thumb sucking or tongue pressure can affect tooth position, although the bigger picture matters more than one habit.
What Parents Should Do
There’s no need to keep staring at the gap every morning. Keep brushing twice a day and make sure your child has regular dental checkups so changes aren’t missed.
Don’t Rush Into Treatment
This is where I think parents sometimes move too fast. A seven-year-old’s teeth aren’t finished arranging themselves. Closing a gap before the permanent teeth have properly erupted can be unnecessary, and sometimes the space is doing exactly what the developing teeth need.
If treatment eventually becomes necessary, the timing should come from the dentist after looking at your child’s teeth and bite. Not from how annoying the gap looks in a school photo.
