Start by Finding Out Why the Gap Is There

Before fixing the space, a dentist needs to look at your teeth and gums. A gap can come from the natural size or position of your teeth.

A Tiny Gap May Need Very Little Work

For a small gap between healthy front teeth, bonding is my favorite option. A dentist applies tooth-colored composite resin to the sides of the teeth and shapes it so the space disappears. The tooth itself usually needs little or no removal, which is a big plus.

Other Ways to Close a Front Tooth Gap

• Clear aligners can feel less noticeable during the day, although you’ll need to wear them as directed for the plan to work properly.

• Braces are more visible, but they give your orthodontist precise control over tooth movement, which can matter when the gap isn’t the only issue.

• Veneers are the cosmetic-heavy choice. They can change tooth shape as well as close a space, but removing healthy enamel just to hide a tiny gap is a tradeoff I’d think hard about.

• If the frenum is contributing to the gap, a dentist or orthodontist may discuss a small procedure called a frenectomy, though closing the gap itself may still require tooth movement.

What to Ask Your Dentist

You’ll also want to know how the result will be maintained. Teeth naturally move over time, and gaps can return after orthodontic treatment without proper retention. If bonding is used, the material may eventually need repair or replacement.
