A patient came to Envy Smile Dental last Tuesday quite stressed out. She had what dentists call a peg lateral, which basically means one of her upper front teeth looked like a little wooden peg. It was way too skinny and pointy.

She wondered: can we actually bond this, or does she have to drop heaps of money on a veneer?

I told her right away: bonding is honestly your best bet here. Here is why.

If you go for a veneer, someone has got to shave your tooth down. But her tooth was tiny already! If I started grinding down that enamel, I would end up way too close to the nerve inside, which can lead to toothache and root canals. That makes zero sense for a healthy young tooth.

With bonding, we do not cut anything away. I took a tiny dab of blue etch gel, cleaned the surface, brushed on some liquid glue, and literally sculpted composite paste straight onto the tooth while she watched in the mirror. I widened the flanks, squared off the tip, and set it with our blue light gun.

Whole thing took 40 minutes. Zero numbing needles. No drill buzz. She had a brew and went back to work with a completely straight smile.

People always ask how long this stuff holds up. Honestly, composite resin is tough stuff. Most patients get five or six years before they need a quick polish to get rid of tea marks. If you happen to crack a corner on a stubborn pistachio nut, don’t sweat it. You just pop back into our chair, and we stick a fresh patch on in ten minutes flat.
