A chap came into Envy Smile Dental last month looking right fed up with his front teeth. He told me he looked in the bathroom mirror one morning and realised his top teeth looked like little flat squares. Years of grinding his jaw at night and drinking fizzy cans of pop had scrubbed his enamel right down.

He looked at me and went: can you actually bond these, or am I stuck paying thousands for crowns?

I told him straight out: bonding is hands down your best shout here.

Think about it this way. His teeth were already worn down to the nub. If I started buzzing away with a dental drill to prep him for crowns, I would end up grinding away what tiny bit of enamel he had left. That would put me right on top of the nerve, which means root canals and awful toothache.

With composite bonding, we do not touch the drill. I cleaned his worn edges, put on a quick dab of blue etch to prep the tooth, and brushed on liquid dental adhesive. Then I built the missing height straight back on with tooth-coloured composite paste. He watched in a hand mirror while I curved the edges so they followed his lower lip. Our blue light set it rock solid, and I buffed it smooth.

Whole visit took about 50 minutes. No needles at all. He walked out with his normal smile back.

Only thing is, if you grind your teeth at night like he does, you have to wear a nightguard to bed. Resin is tough stuff, but if you clamp your jaws together in your sleep, you will chew right through it without a guard.
