If you have dark grey trauma bands or white fluorosis patches, you might not want expensive ceramic crowns that require heavy drilling. That is why so many patients ask us about using multi-layered composite bonding to disguise severe discolouration.
In cosmetic dentistry, we call this multi-layered composite veneering. We do not grind away your enamel. You walk out after about ninety minutes with an initial opaque resin blocker applied over the dark shadow, followed by a lifelike enamel composite layer on top.
How long does it hold up?
In our clinic at 3 Goldhawk Road in London and talking with people who travel down to see us from Manchester most patients get around 5 to 8 years out of their bonding before it needs a buff or a small repair. Many make it well past nine years without touching it.
The main challenge is cervical margin maintenance. The opaque blocker permanently stops dark discolouration from showing through from behind, but the junction at the gumline can trap food pigments if plaque sits there too long.
Plaque also gathers easily along the gumline border. You have to thread floss right down into that crevice every single night, or tea and red wine will leave a dirty brown line right along the bond. An electric brush helps, but an interdental stick does the real work.
Beyond that, leave hard plastic packaging alone. Don’t crack nuts with your front teeth. A basic night splint will sort out any grinding while you sleep.
