What are the real risks?

In our clinic at 3 Goldhawk Road in London and talking with people who travel down to see us from Manchester the number one risk is sudden corner chipping.

Incisors have razor-thin edges designed purely for slicing through soft food. The edge packing extra composite has to absorb awkward shear forces every time you bite a bagel. Enamel handles that fine; resin flexes slightly under pressure. One awkward bite on a tough crust or an apple can snap that resin tip clean off.

Another common problem is lower teeth bumping into the new edge. If the back surface ends up bulky, your bottom teeth strike it whenever you chew or speak. That constant tapping loosens the bond.

Plaque also settles easily along the join. You have to thread floss right down into that crevice every single night, or tea and red wine will leave a dirty brown line right along the bond. An electric brush helps, but an interdental stick does the real work.

Beyond that, leave plastic tags alone. Don’t crack pistachios open with your front teeth. A basic night splint will sort out any grinding while you sleep.
