Don’t Wait If the Tooth Keeps Moving
A tooth can feel loose for different reasons. Gum disease is a common one because infection around the gums can damage the tissues and bone that hold a tooth in place. An injury can also loosen it. So can grinding your teeth, particularly if you wake up with a sore jaw or notice that you clench at night.
Signs You Should Book an Appointment Soon
• The tooth moves when you aren’t trying to move it, which is enough reason to get it checked.
• Bleeding or swollen gums around that tooth. A little blood after brushing isn’t something I’d shrug off when the tooth is already loose.
• Your bite suddenly feels different, almost as if the tooth is sitting too high.
• Bad breath that keeps coming back along with gum changes, even after you’ve cleaned your mouth properly.
• A loose tooth after being hit or knocked. That’s one I’d treat as a prompt dental visit rather than a wait-and-see situation.
What If There Was an Injury?
This is where I’d be especially firm. If you fell, got hit in the mouth, or bit something unusually hard and a tooth became loose afterward, see a dentist as soon as you can. The tooth may still be supported by its surrounding tissues, and getting it assessed early gives the dentist a better chance to protect it.
When Is It an Emergency?
A loose tooth with heavy bleeding needs urgent attention. So does significant swelling or severe pain, particularly if you also have trouble swallowing or breathing. And if a permanent tooth has been knocked out completely, don’t sit around hoping it will sort itself out.
A loose adult tooth isn’t automatically a lost tooth. Sometimes the cause can be treated and the tooth can become stable again. The sooner you find out what’s actually happening, the better.
