They just need a little shape. Composite edge bonding is often a fit when a tooth looks slightly too short, narrow, chipped or uneven and you want to change that without removing much of the natural tooth.

So who actually makes a candidate?

If your front teeth look narrow or have gaps, composite bonding can work really well. The dentist adds tooth-coloured resin directly to the tooth. Shapes it so the visible width increases without needing a crown.

Your teeth need to be reasonably healthy first. Active decay or gum problems need attention before cosmetic bonding makes sense. You also need enamel and a bite that won’t constantly put heavy pressure on the bonded edge.

Tooth width matters more than you’d think.

Good candidates often have teeth that look a little too slim compared with the rest of their smile. Sometimes the issue is a gap. Sometimes one front tooth simply looks shorter or narrower than its neighbour.

• Small gaps between teeth especially where the space makes the teeth look unusually narrow.

• A chipped or worn edge that needs rebuilding provided the tooth itself is healthy enough for bonding.

• narrow-looking teeth, where adding a little width creates a more balanced shape rather than making the tooth look oversized.

What about your bite?

This part gets overlooked. If you bite directly onto the bonded area the material has work to do and is more likely to chip or wear.

So if you grind your teeth at night have a bite or regularly put a lot of pressure on your front teeth your dentist needs to factor that in. Bonding can still be possible. The plan needs to account for how your teeth actually meet.

When bonding isn’t the answer

Composite isn’t magic. If a tooth needs structural repair has extensive decay or has a bite that repeatedly damages the material another treatment may make more sense.

• Heavy grinding is worth discussing since repeated pressure can shorten the lifespan of the bonding.

• large changes in tooth width may need a different cosmetic approach because adding too much composite can make the tooth feel thick.

The question to ask before you bond

The best candidate isn’t someone who wants wider teeth. It’s someone whose natural tooth shape can be improved with a controlled addition while keeping the bite and overall proportions, in mind.

Visit our page on composite bonding London to explore treatment options, costs, and expert advice.

Some smiles don’t need a change.
