A tooth-colored resin is shaped onto the tooth. Hardened in place. The dentist then smooths it so the repair blends in with your smile. Pretty simple.

Small Chips and Cracks

A chipped front tooth can catch your eye every time you look in the mirror. Even a tiny missing corner can change the way a tooth looks especially when it shows while you smile.

Bonding works well for chips because the resin can be built up to replace the missing area. The dentist shapes it to match the tooth. The edge doesn’t look like a repair sitting on top.

Minor cracks can sometimes be repaired with bonding although the cause and depth of the crack matter. A deeper crack needs a dental exam before anyone decides that bonding is enough.

Uneven Tooth Edges

Some teeth are naturally uneven. One front tooth may look slightly shorter than the one beside it or an edge may have worn down over time. Bonding can add a material and reshape that area.

It works well when the change you want is small. You aren’t asking the dentist to redesign the tooth. You’re asking for an adjustment.

Gaps Between Teeth

A gap between two teeth can sometimes be closed with bonding. The dentist adds resin to the sides of the teeth. Shapes it so the space looks smaller.

This is one of my uses for bonding because the change can be surprisingly noticeable without feeling like you’ve had a major cosmetic procedure.

Discoloration and Odd-Shaped Teeth

Bonding can also cover areas of discoloration particularly when whitening isn’t likely to fix the problem. Of trying to bleach the tooth again and again the dentist can place tooth-colored material over the affected area.

It can also change the appearance of a tooth that looks unusually narrow or oddly shaped. Sometimes a tiny bit of added width is enough.

What Bonding Can’t Really Fix

• Deep decay needs more than a patch and your dentist needs to deal with the damaged tooth first.

• A large broken section can put much pressure on bonding especially if you bite hard with that tooth.

• Severe tooth discoloration may show through the resin depending on what caused the color change.

• Grinding can wear bonding down faster though a dentist can talk through ways to protect the repair.

A Small Fix That Can Feel Like a Big Change

Bonding makes the sense when the problem is relatively small and the tooth underneath is healthy enough to support the repair. It’s quick. It usually requires removal of natural tooth structure. For a cosmetic change I’d take that over turning a tiny issue into a bigger project any day.

The catch is that bonding isn’t permanent. It can. Stain, over time so your habits and the location of the tooth matter.

Visit our page on composite bonding London to explore treatment options, costs, and expert advice.

Tooth bonding is one of those treatments that sounds more complicated than it really is.
