But they’re not the same fix. People mix these up a lot, mostly because both use that same tooth-colored stuff and both end up looking normal again once done.

Bonding’s Really Just About Shape

Bonding is resin, shaped onto the tooth by hand, then hardened. That’s it, basically. Dentists use it for a small chip, a tiny gap, or to tidy up a tooth that looks a bit off.

It’s stuck right onto the tooth, so there’s no need to shave down a bunch of enamel first. For small cosmetic fixes I’d pick bonding every time, honestly, it’s less of a production and looks pretty convincing if the color’s matched right.

Fillings Are a Decay Thing

Totally different starting point. There’s decay, so the dentist digs that out first, then fills the gap and shapes it so biting feels normal again.

If there’s an actual cavity, bonding just isn’t the tool for that. Decay has to go, no way around it. Covering it up cosmetically and calling it done would be a bad call.

Fillings exist mainly to patch a tooth back up after decay’s done its damage. Sometimes they handle small fractures too, depends where exactly and how much tooth’s left to work with.

So Which One Do You Actually Need?

Simplest way to think it through, what caused the problem in the first place? Cosmetic thing or a small chip, bonding. Actual hole from decay, filling, obviously.

Cosmetic repair, bonding’s the natural pick. Cavity’s involved, get the decay out first before worrying about anything else. And back teeth take a lot of chewing force, which can change what your dentist suggests too.

Do They Last the Same Amount of Time?

Nope, neither one’s forever. Bonding chips or wears down eventually, especially if you’re biting hard stuff right on it. Fillings wear out too and need swapping out sometimes.

Visit our page on composite bonding London to explore treatment options, costs, and expert advice.

Honestly a chip and a small cavity can look almost the same in the mirror.
