Bonding and fillings can end up looking almost the same in the mirror. Both come in that tooth-colored material. Both fix a tooth. But they’re not solving the same problem, not even close really.

Where Tooth Bonding Fits

Bonding is just resin, tooth-colored stuff, that gets stuck onto the tooth and shaped by hand before it’s hardened under a light. Small chip, small gap, slightly uneven tooth shape, that’s bonding’s lane.

Because the dentist is literally shaping it on the spot, there’s a ton of control over how it turns out. That’s part of why I’m a fan of bonding for small stuff. If the tooth’s basically fine, why go bigger than you need to?

Bonding for Cosmetic Changes

Think of a small chip on a front tooth. No cavity in sight. Tooth’s not weak or anything, you just keep noticing it in the mirror every morning.

That’s bonding territory. Dentist adds resin right along the edge, shapes it so things look even again, and honestly after a day or so you forget it’s even there.

Where Fillings Make More Sense

Fillings work backwards from bonding in a way. Decay gets removed first, then the space gets filled in. Composite fillings are common too since they blend in fine with your natural teeth.

Small cavity on a back tooth, that’s your classic filling case, especially once it’s already chewed up part of the biting surface. But a chipped front tooth with zero decay? Bonding wins there, hands down. Small gap you want closed up? Also bonding, no reason to make it a bigger job than it needs to be.

What About Strength?

This is where people mess up sometimes, not gonna lie. Bonding holds up fine day to day but it’s not made of steel. Chewing on pens, biting hard candy right on a bonded edge, bad idea long term.

Fillings aren’t invincible either honestly. Depends on how much healthy tooth’s still there and where exactly the filling’s sitting. Big filling on a wrecked tooth is a totally different story than a small cavity getting patched up.

The Better Way to Think About It

Stop asking “bonding or fillings, which wins.” Wrong question. Ask what’s actually broken.

Cavity, you need a filling. Cosmetic tweak, bonding’s probably your answer. They overlap sometimes since the material’s the same either way, but why it’s sitting on your tooth in the first place, that’s the real difference.

Visit our page on composite bonding London to explore treatment options, costs, and expert advice.

Here’s something people get confused about a lot.
