The Treatment

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

A dental hygienist is a specially trained oral health professional focused on preventing and treating gum disease, removing tartar and plaque that cannot be eliminated by brushing alone, and providing the expert guidance you need to maintain a healthy mouth between appointments.

Even with an excellent home routine, plaque can harden into calculus (tartar) in hard-to-reach areas — particularly along the gumline and between teeth. Once tartar forms, it cannot be removed by brushing. Left untreated, it creates the ideal environment for bacteria to cause gum disease, bad breath and eventually tooth loss.

At Envy Smile in London, our hygiene appointments go well beyond a simple clean. We assess your gum health, remove plaque and tartar professionally, polish your teeth to remove surface staining, and give you personalised advice so you can maintain better oral health at home. We also offer AirFlow stain removal for a more thorough and comfortable clean.

Hygiene with AirFlow

£120

advanced hygiene with AirFlow stain removal

AirFlow uses a controlled jet of air, water and fine powder to gently but effectively remove biofilm, staining and surface deposits from all tooth surfaces — including between teeth, around implants and along the gumline — with less discomfort than traditional scaling alone.

  • Everything in Scale & Polish, plus:
  • AirFlow removes coffee, tea & tobacco stains
  • Reaches between teeth and below gumline
  • Gentler — ideal for sensitivity
  • Safe around implants, braces & restorations
Why It Matters

The Benefits of Regular Dental Hygiene Appointments

Regular hygiene visits are one of the most important investments you can make in your long-term oral and general health. Research links gum disease to heart disease, diabetes and respiratory conditions — keeping your gums healthy is about far more than your smile.

Prevents Gum Disease

Professional removal of plaque and tartar disrupts the bacterial colonies that cause gingivitis and periodontitis — the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Early detection and treatment prevents irreversible damage.

Minimises Risk of Tooth Loss

Gum disease that goes untreated can destroy the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. Regular hygiene appointments catch problems early, before they escalate to the point where teeth cannot be saved.

Removes Stubborn Staining

Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco cause surface staining that brushing alone cannot remove. Professional scaling and AirFlow treatment lifts these deposits, leaving your teeth visibly cleaner and brighter.

Eliminates Bad Breath

Persistent bad breath (halitosis) is most commonly caused by bacteria living in plaque and tartar deposits. A professional clean removes these deposits and leaves your mouth fresh — results brushing alone cannot achieve.

Reduces Decay Risk

Plaque produces acids that attack tooth enamel, leading to cavities. Regular professional cleaning — especially in areas your toothbrush can't effectively reach — significantly reduces the risk of needing fillings.

Protects General Health

Studies consistently link periodontal (gum) disease with increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and complications during pregnancy. Protecting your gum health protects your wider wellbeing.

Step by Step

What to Expect at Your Hygiene Appointment

Here is exactly what happens during a hygiene appointment at Envy Smile, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave with cleaner, healthier teeth.

1

Assessment & Medical Review

Your hygienist reviews your medical history, asks about any concerns, and examines your teeth and gums — measuring gum pocket depths to assess for gum disease and charting any areas of concern.

2

Scaling

Ultrasonic instruments vibrate at high frequency to break up and remove tartar deposits from tooth surfaces and along and below the gumline — reaching areas your toothbrush simply cannot.

3

AirFlow / Polish

Your teeth are polished using a professional paste to remove surface staining and leave enamel smooth. If you've chosen AirFlow, the powder-jet treatment is performed here for a deeper, more comfortable clean.

4

Advice & Next Steps

Your hygienist gives you personalised guidance on brushing technique, flossing, interdental brushes and any areas needing attention at home — and recommends your next appointment interval.

Direct Access: You do not need a dentist referral to book a hygiene appointment at Envy Smile. Since 2013, dental hygienists in the UK can see patients directly. Simply book online or call us — we recommend combining hygiene visits with a regular dental check-up for comprehensive care.
Advanced Hygiene

What Is AirFlow Stain Removal?

AirFlow is an advanced teeth cleaning technology that uses a precisely controlled jet of air, warm water and fine erythritol powder to remove biofilm, plaque and surface staining from all tooth surfaces — including the spaces between teeth, around the gumline and beneath orthodontic appliances.

Unlike traditional scaling and polishing pastes, AirFlow removes bacterial biofilm before it has a chance to mineralise into tartar, making it more effective at the earliest stage of plaque formation. The treatment is also notably more comfortable, making it particularly well suited to patients with sensitive teeth or gums.

AirFlow is especially effective at lifting stains from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and heavily pigmented foods. It is also the preferred cleaning method for patients with dental implants, veneers, crowns or fixed orthodontic braces, as it is safe on all these restorations.

AirFlow is ideal for:

  • Heavy coffee, tea or tobacco staining
  • Patients with sensitive teeth or gums
  • Around dental implants and restorations
  • Cleaning around fixed braces or aligners
  • Pre-whitening or pre-veneer deep clean
  • Long-overdue hygiene appointments
Please note: AirFlow brightens teeth by removing surface staining — it is not a whitening treatment and will not change the natural colour of your enamel. For a whiter result beyond surface staining, professional teeth whitening is recommended. Ask your hygienist for advice at your appointment.

Between Appointments

How to Look After Your Teeth at Home

Professional hygiene appointments are most effective when supported by a consistent home care routine. Here is what your hygienist recommends for maintaining a healthy mouth between visits:

✓ Do

  • Brush twice daily — morning and before bed — for a full 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes — your toothbrush cannot reach these areas
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash to strengthen enamel and reduce bacterial levels (at a different time to brushing)
  • Replace your toothbrush or electric head every 3 months
  • Attend hygiene appointments every 3–6 months as recommended
  • Drink plenty of water — especially after staining food or drink

✗ Avoid

  • Brushing immediately after acidic food or drink — wait 30 minutes to avoid damaging softened enamel
  • Smoking — a major risk factor for gum disease, staining and oral cancer
  • Excessive sugary or acidic food and drinks — they accelerate enamel erosion and decay
  • Skipping flossing — 40% of tooth surfaces are between teeth and unreachable by a toothbrush
  • Brushing too hard — it wears enamel and causes gum recession rather than a better clean
  • Ignoring bleeding gums — this is a sign of gum disease, not normal brushing

Dental Hygienist London — FAQs

At Envy Smile, a standard hygiene appointment costs £85 and includes a full assessment, ultrasonic scale and polish, and personalised oral hygiene advice. Hygiene with AirFlow stain removal is £120. Periodontal (gum disease) treatment is £350 for a 60-minute deep cleaning session. Private hygiene appointments in London typically range from £75–£150 — our pricing is competitive and fully transparent with no hidden fees.
The recommended interval varies by individual. Most patients benefit from a hygiene appointment every 3–6 months. Patients with healthy gums and low plaque build-up may only need a visit once a year. Those with a history of gum disease, heavy staining, dental implants or fixed orthodontic appliances may benefit from more frequent visits. Your hygienist will advise on the right interval for you at the end of your appointment.
Regular hygiene visits prevent gum disease, reduce the risk of tooth decay and tooth loss, remove stubborn staining, eliminate bad breath and support your overall health. Research consistently links untreated gum disease with increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Professional cleaning removes the tartar and bacterial deposits that brushing alone cannot, making hygiene appointments a vital part of preventive dental care.
A scale and polish uses ultrasonic instruments to remove tartar and a polishing paste to smooth and brighten enamel — the standard professional clean. AirFlow uses a gentle jet of air, water and fine erythritol powder to remove bacterial biofilm and surface staining from all tooth surfaces, including between teeth and below the gumline, with less discomfort. AirFlow is particularly effective for stubborn staining, sensitive patients and cleaning around implants, braces or veneers.
Your appointment begins with a review of your medical history and an assessment of your teeth and gums, including gum pocket depth measurements to screen for gum disease. Your hygienist then uses ultrasonic instruments to remove tartar and plaque, followed by polishing — or AirFlow if you have chosen that option. The appointment concludes with personalised advice on brushing technique, interdental cleaning and anything specific to your needs, plus a recommended recall interval.
Yes. Under Direct Access rules introduced in 2013, you can book directly with a dental hygienist at Envy Smile without a prior dentist referral. Simply book online or call us. We do recommend combining regular hygiene visits with a dental check-up at least once a year, as dentists check for things hygienists do not — including cavities, oral cancer screening and assessment of existing dental work.
A scale and polish should not be painful. You may feel unusual vibration or cold water sensations from the ultrasonic instruments. Patients with inflamed gums or significant gum recession may experience some mild sensitivity, particularly at the gumline. Our hygienist will always work gently and can adjust the approach for nervous or sensitive patients. AirFlow is generally more comfortable than traditional scaling for sensitive patients.
Dental hygienists at Envy Smile can perform: scale and polish (supragingival and subgingival cleaning), AirFlow stain removal, periodontal deep cleaning and root surface debridement, fluoride application, oral cancer screening, gum health monitoring, and personalised oral hygiene instruction. They can also advise on diet, smoking cessation and the best products for your individual needs.
AirFlow removes surface staining — from coffee, tea, tobacco and pigmented foods — which can make teeth appear noticeably cleaner and brighter. However, it is not a whitening treatment and does not change the natural colour of your enamel. If you want to whiten your teeth beyond their natural shade, professional teeth whitening using hydrogen peroxide gel is required. Ask your hygienist for a recommendation at your appointment.
Essential. Professional hygiene appointments remove what has already built up, but preventing plaque from accumulating in the first place requires a consistent daily routine. Brush for two minutes twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth with floss or interdental brushes every day, and use a fluoride mouthwash at a different time to brushing. The goal is to disrupt plaque before it mineralises into tartar — which can only be removed professionally. Your hygienist will demonstrate the techniques most effective for your specific teeth and gum health.
