Breaking a tooth during five-a-side football or falling on a slippery pavement is pure panic. A lad came into Envy Smile Dental on a rainy Tuesday clutching a paper napkin to his mouth. Half of his front incisor had snapped clean off after taking an elbow during a weekend football match.

He looked terrified and asked me: can tooth bonding actually fix a broken tooth, or am I going to be toothless for weeks waiting for a crown?

I took a quick X-ray and gave him the good news: the root is totally intact and the nerve isn’t exposed. We can rebuild this whole tooth right now.

You don’t have to walk around with a gaping hole while waiting for a crown. We build the tooth back up by hand right in front of you.

I bevelled the rough fracture line, painted on liquid glue, and placed white resin paste layer by layer. I sculpted the missing corner, curved the edge to mirror his other front tooth, and set it with our blue light gun. Then I buffed the tooth with fine sandpaper discs.

He checked his smile in the mirror and started laughing. He spent less than an hour with us, didn’t have a single injection, and went straight back to university with his smile restored.
