A young woman came into Envy Smile Dental last Tuesday feeling quite down about a front tooth gap. She had a two-millimetre space right between her two upper central teeth that she had hated since school. Every time she laughed, she caught herself putting her hand over her mouth.

She sat in my chair and went: can you actually fix a front tooth gap with bonding, or will my teeth look like giant white squares?

I told her right away: bonding is honestly your best bet here.

The whole secret with a front tooth gap is dividing the space right down the middle. If a dentist puts all the resin onto one tooth, your smile looks completely lopsided. But when you add half the width to the left tooth and half to the right tooth, both front teeth mirror each other like twins.

With composite resin, we do not cut anything away. I took a tiny dab of blue etch gel, cleaned the inner edges, brushed on some liquid glue, and literally sculpted white composite paste straight onto both teeth while she watched in a little hand mirror. I curved the edges so they looked natural, and set the paste hard with our blue light gun.

Whole thing took about 40 minutes. Zero numbing needles. No drill buzz. She had a brew, checked her new smile in the car mirror, and was buzzing.

People always ask how long it holds up. Honestly, composite resin is tough stuff. Most patients get five or six years before they need a quick polish to get rid of tea marks. If you happen to crack a corner on a stubborn pistachio nut, don’t sweat it. You just pop back into our chair, and we stick a fresh patch on in ten minutes flat.
