What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge literally "bridges" the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the natural teeth either side of the gap — known as abutment teeth.

Bridges are a fixed solution — unlike dentures, they cannot be removed — and are custom-made from porcelain, ceramic or zirconia to match the colour, shape and size of your surrounding teeth. They restore appearance, prevent remaining teeth from drifting and help maintain normal bite and jaw function.

The Procedure

How Is a Dental Bridge Fitted?

  1. The abutment teeth (either side of the gap) are prepared by reshaping them to accommodate the crowns that will hold the bridge in place.
  2. Impressions or a digital scan of the prepared teeth are taken and sent to our dental laboratory where your custom bridge is made. A temporary bridge is fitted to protect the teeth in the interim.
  3. At your second appointment the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent bridge is checked for fit, bite and colour before being permanently cemented in place.
Note:* The adjacent teeth used as anchors require some preparation (reshaping). If you would prefer an option that does not involve altering healthy teeth, a dental implant may be a better solution. Your dentist will discuss all options at your consultation.

Types of Bridge

Traditional bridge — supported by crowns on both adjacent teeth (most common)

Cantilever bridge — supported by a crown on one adjacent tooth only

Maryland bonded bridge — bonded to backs of adjacent teeth without full crowns (for front teeth)

Implant-supported bridge — supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth

Life Benefits

Why Choose a Dental Bridge?

Sturdy and natural-looking. A well-fitted dental bridge is a fixed, secure restoration that looks and functions like natural teeth — unlike removable dentures, there is no movement or need for adhesive.

Restores full bite function. Replacing missing teeth with a bridge allows you to chew and bite normally, preventing adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap and altering your bite over time.

Prevents further dental problems. A gap left by a missing tooth can cause adjacent teeth to shift, gum disease to develop and bone loss to occur. A bridge addresses the gap promptly to protect your long-term oral health.

Dental Bridges Harlesden — FAQs

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth held in place by crowns cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. It is a permanent, non-removable solution.
At Envy Smile, dental bridge preparation and impressions cost £800. Recementing an existing bridge is £150. The final cost depends on the number of teeth being replaced and the material used. Call 020 3719 6889 for a personalised quote.
A bridge uses the adjacent teeth as anchors, requiring them to be reshaped. A dental implant replaces the tooth root with a titanium post placed in the jawbone — preserving the adjacent teeth entirely. Implants also prevent bone loss. Your dentist will discuss which option is most suitable at your consultation.
A dental bridge typically requires two appointments: one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and a second (usually 1–2 weeks later) to fit the permanent bridge.
A well-maintained dental bridge can last 10–15 years or longer. Good oral hygiene, including flossing under the bridge using floss threaders or interdental brushes, is essential for longevity.
Clean around and under the bridge using a floss threader, interdental brushes or a water flosser to remove plaque from beneath the pontic. Brush the bridge as you would natural teeth. Your hygienist can demonstrate the best technique.
A bridge can occasionally become loose. If this happens, call 020 3719 6889. Keep the bridge safe and avoid eating on that side. We can usually recement it (£150) at a prompt appointment.
