The Treatment

What Is Denture Stabilisation?

Denture stabilisation — also known as implant-retained dentures — uses dental implants placed in the jawbone to anchor and secure a denture. As few as two implants can dramatically improve the stability of a full lower denture, while two to four implants are typically used for upper dentures.

Unlike conventional dentures which rest on the gums and can move when eating or speaking, implant-retained dentures click onto the implants and stay firmly in place throughout the day. They are removed for cleaning at night, combining the convenience of a removable appliance with the security of implant support.

Denture stabilisation is often significantly more affordable than a full implant-supported fixed bridge (All-on-4), while delivering a dramatic improvement in quality of life compared to conventional dentures.

The Procedure

How Does Denture Stabilisation Work?

  1. A full assessment is carried out to determine bone density and suitability for implant placement. X-rays and possibly a CT scan will be taken.
  2. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. A healing period of 3–6 months follows to allow the implants to fuse with the bone (osseointegration).
  3. Once the implants are secure, special attachments (locators or bar) are fitted to the implants, and corresponding fittings are added to the underside of your denture.
  4. Your denture now clicks firmly onto the implants — secure throughout the day and removed for cleaning at night.

Denture Stabilisation vs Conventional Dentures

Conventional denture — rests on gums, can move when eating or speaking, contributes to bone loss

Implant-retained denture — anchored firmly by implants, no movement, prevents bone loss

All-on-4 fixed bridge — permanently fixed to implants, cannot be removed, higher cost

Denture stabilisation offers an excellent middle ground — security of implants at a lower cost than full fixed restoration

Life Benefits

Benefits of Denture Stabilisation

Dramatically improved stability. Implant-retained dentures are firmly anchored — no movement when eating, speaking or laughing. No need for messy adhesives or worry about the denture shifting.

Prevents ongoing bone loss. When teeth are missing the jawbone resorbs (shrinks) over time. Dental implants stimulate the bone just as natural tooth roots do — maintaining jaw structure and facial appearance.

Restored confidence and quality of life. Many patients describe denture stabilisation as life-changing — finally able to eat the foods they enjoy, speak without anxiety and smile with confidence.

Denture Stabilisation Harlesden — FAQs

Denture stabilisation uses dental implants placed in the jawbone to anchor and retain a denture. The denture clicks onto the implants and stays firmly in place throughout the day, eliminating the movement associated with conventional dentures.
Typically two implants are sufficient to stabilise a lower denture, while two to four are generally recommended for upper dentures. The exact number depends on bone density and the type of attachment system used.
Most denture wearers are suitable for denture stabilisation provided they have sufficient bone density for implant placement. Factors such as bone volume, general health and smoking status are assessed at consultation. Bone grafting may be possible in some cases of reduced bone.
Pricing depends on the number of implants required and whether bone grafting is needed. Call us on 020 3719 6889 for a consultation and personalised quote. 0% finance is available to spread the cost.
A conventional denture rests on the gums and can move when eating, speaking or laughing. An implant-retained denture is anchored by implants — stable, secure and requiring no adhesive. It also stimulates the jawbone to prevent bone loss.
In many cases your existing denture can be converted to an implant-retained denture by adding locator attachments. If the denture is worn or ill-fitting a new one may be recommended. Your dentist will assess this at consultation.
An implant-retained denture is removable — it clicks on and off. All-on-4 (full arch implant bridge) is permanently fixed to the implants and cannot be removed. All-on-4 is generally more expensive but provides maximum stability and bone preservation.
