Mouth cancer (oral cancer) is one of the most treatable cancers when detected early — yet rates of late diagnosis remain high. At Envy Smile near Shepherd's Bush, mouth cancer screening is included as part of your routine dental examination, carried out by our GDC-registered dentist Dr Hemani Gill.
At Envy Smile
Mouth cancer (oral cancer) can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate and throat. It accounts for around 2% of all cancers in the UK — and more than 8,000 people are diagnosed each year, a number that has been rising for over two decades.
When detected early, mouth cancer has a much better prognosis — with survival rates significantly higher for early-stage compared to late-stage diagnosis. Regular dental examinations are one of the most effective ways to detect potential signs of oral cancer early, as your dentist examines areas of the mouth that most people would not regularly inspect themselves.
At Envy Smile, our GDC-registered dentist carries out a thorough mouth cancer screening at every routine examination as a matter of course.
Book a Dental ExaminationWhile mouth cancer can affect anyone, certain factors significantly increase the risk. Understanding your risk factors helps you and your dentist take the most appropriate preventative approach.
Early Warning Signs — See a Dentist Promptly If You Notice
A sore or ulcer in the mouth that does not heal within 3 weeks
A red or white patch inside the mouth — on the tongue, cheek lining or floor of mouth
A lump or thickening in the mouth, cheek or neck
Persistent numbness or pain in the mouth or lips
Difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the tongue or jaw
A persistent sore throat or hoarseness
Unexplained loose teeth or problems with dentures
Early detection dramatically improves prognosis. When mouth cancer is caught at an early stage, the prognosis is significantly better. Regular dental screenings give the best chance of detection before symptoms become advanced.
Sustained good oral health. Regular dental examinations — which include mouth cancer screening as standard — are the most effective way to maintain overall oral health and catch any problems early.
