A mild degree of overbite (upper teeth overlapping lower by 1–3mm) is normal. An excessive overbite — sometimes called a deep bite — occurs when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth by more than a third of their height, or when the lower teeth bite into the palate or gum behind the upper teeth. This can cause accelerated wear on the lower front teeth, gum damage and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort.
Invisalign treats overbite by intruding the front teeth (pushing them back into the jaw slightly) and/or erupting the back teeth (encouraging them to come forward) to open the bite.
