What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury. This infection may spread through the root canal system and could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort.

If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be extracted. Root canal therapy allows us to save the natural tooth — removing the infected pulp, cleaning the canal, sealing it and restoring the tooth with a crown so it functions as normal.

Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to the practice.

The Procedure

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

  1. First, local anaesthetic is administered to ensure no discomfort is felt during treatment. The area around the tooth is fully numbed before any work begins.
  2. The tooth is prepared with a drill, allowing access to the root canal system inside the tooth.
  3. The root canal system is thoroughly cleaned out to remove all infection and pulp using fine instruments and antibacterial solution.
  4. The root canal system is then filled and sealed temporarily. A crown is placed to protect the tooth.
  5. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled and a final crown fitted to restore full function.
Important: Root canal treatment is highly successful when carried out promptly. Do not delay — an untreated infection can spread rapidly and become significantly more difficult to treat.

Why Choose Root Canal Treatment?

Preservation of remaining healthy tooth structure. Root canal treatment saves your natural tooth — avoiding extraction and maintaining the structure, appearance and function of your smile without the cost and complexity of a dental implant.

Prevention of infection spreading further. An untreated root canal infection can spread to adjacent teeth, soft tissue and in severe cases the jawbone. Prompt treatment contains and eliminates the infection before it causes wider damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Root Canal Harlesden — FAQs

Root canal treatment (endodontics) involves removing infected pulp from inside a tooth, cleaning and shaping the root canal system, then filling and sealing it to prevent re-infection. A crown is usually placed afterwards to restore the tooth to full function.
Root canal therapy is necessary when the pulp — the living tissue inside the tooth — becomes infected due to tooth decay, a cracked tooth or injury. Without treatment the infection spreads, an abscess can form and the tooth may ultimately need extracting.
Common signs include: severe toothache especially when biting; prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold; tooth discolouration; swollen or tender gums near the tooth; and a persistent abscess or pimple on the gum. Book an appointment promptly if you experience any of these symptoms.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic so you should not feel pain during the treatment itself. Some sensitivity and tenderness around the tooth for a few days afterwards is normal and typically settles quickly. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the treatment is.
At Envy Smile, initial root canal treatment costs £185–£230. Full root canal treatment is £450–£650. A crown (recommended to protect the tooth afterwards) starts from £650. Call 020 3719 6889 for advice about your individual case.
Root canal treatment usually requires two or more appointments. Each session may last 60–90 minutes depending on the complexity of the root canal system. Your dentist will give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment.
With proper care a root canal-treated tooth can last many years — often a lifetime. A crown placed over the tooth significantly improves its longevity and resistance to fracture. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential.
Root canal treatment has a high success rate but in some cases re-infection can occur, particularly if the root canal system is complex or the tooth is re-exposed to bacteria. If re-treatment is needed, this will be referred to a specialist endodontist.
The main alternative to root canal treatment is extraction of the tooth. However, preserving the natural tooth is always preferable where possible. Extraction followed by a dental implant, bridge or denture is more costly overall and more invasive than root canal treatment.
Avoid eating on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration has been placed. Eat soft foods and avoid hard or sticky foods on that side of the mouth initially. Your dentist will advise when it is safe to return to normal eating.
