Tartar Removal White City

Tartar (dental calculus) is hardened plaque — a mineralised deposit that forms on tooth surfaces when plaque is not adequately removed within 24–72 hours. Unlike plaque, tartar cannot be removed by brushing or flossing and requires professional scaling to remove. At Envy Smile near White City, professional tartar removal is carried out at every hygiene appointment using ultrasonic scalers, hand instruments and AirFlow technology.

"I went there for my dental emergency and the lovely lady at reception kindly let me in for a check-up. They did a quick X-ray followed by cleaning which actually worked. The doctor was understanding and explained the cause and advised me correctly. Definitely recommended."

The Treatment

Tartar Removal near White City

When plaque is not removed from tooth surfaces by brushing and flossing, it undergoes mineralisation — hardening into a calcified deposit known as tartar or calculus. Tartar provides a rough surface on which more plaque accumulates, and the bacteria it harbours cause inflammation of the surrounding gum tissue. Tartar also forms below the gumline (subgingival calculus), where it is particularly damaging to the bone and ligaments supporting the teeth.

At Envy Smile near White City, tartar removal is part of every scale and polish appointment (from £85). Our dentist uses ultrasonic scalers to break up and remove tartar deposits, followed by hand instrumentation to clean root surfaces and remove any remaining deposits. AirFlow (£120) provides additional biofilm and staining removal using a pressurised air and water system.

How We Treat Tartar at Envy Smile

  1. Assessment
The extent of tartar build-up is assessed, including below-the-gumline deposits. X-rays may be recommended to identify tartar at sites not visible clinically.
  2. Ultrasonic Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler uses high-frequency vibrations to break up and dislodge tartar deposits from tooth surfaces and below the gumline.
  3. Hand Scaling
Hand instruments are used to remove any remaining tartar and smooth root surfaces — particularly important for subgingival deposits.
  4. Polishing / AirFlow
Polishing removes soft deposits and surface staining following scaling. AirFlow (£120) provides enhanced biofilm removal using pressurised warm water, powder and air.

Life Benefits

Why Treat Tartar Professionally?

Only a professional can remove tartar. No toothbrush, mouthwash or interdental product can remove hardened tartar. Professional scaling is the only effective removal method — protecting the gums and bone around your teeth.

Prevents the cascade of problems tartar causes. Tartar drives gum inflammation, gum disease, bad breath and staining. Regular professional removal prevents all of these from developing or worsening.

Cleaner, brighter, smoother teeth. Teeth feel noticeably smoother and look visibly cleaner after tartar removal — and are less susceptible to new plaque accumulation on smoother surfaces.

Understanding Tartar

Frequently Asked Questions

Tartar Removal White City — FAQs

Tartar (dental calculus) is hardened plaque. When plaque is not removed from tooth surfaces within 24–72 hours, minerals from saliva cause it to harden into a calcified deposit. Once hardened, tartar cannot be removed by brushing — only professional scaling removes it.
At Envy Smile, tartar removal is included in every scale and polish appointment at £85. AirFlow hygiene, which provides enhanced removal, is £120. For heavy subgingival tartar, periodontal treatment (£350/session) may be recommended. Call 020 3719 6889.
Most patients benefit from professional tartar removal every 3–6 months. Patients who build up tartar quickly, smoke or have a history of gum disease benefit from more frequent visits — typically every 3 months.
No — once plaque has hardened into tartar, no home product or technique will remove it. Only professional dental instruments can break up and remove calcified tartar deposits, particularly those below the gumline.
A standard scale and polish is generally comfortable. If tartar is present below the gumline or gums are inflamed, some sensitivity may be felt during treatment. Local anaesthetic can be applied if needed. AirFlow is generally very comfortable.
Tartar provides a rough surface on which more plaque accumulates. The bacteria in tartar cause gum inflammation (gingivitis), which progresses to periodontitis and bone loss if untreated. Tartar also causes bad breath and surface staining of the teeth.
