An underbite can result from the lower jaw being positioned forward relative to the upper jaw (skeletal underbite) or from the upper teeth being tipped backwards or the lower teeth tipped forwards (dental underbite). Dental underbites — where the bone relationship is broadly correct but the teeth are positioned incorrectly — respond well to Invisalign. Skeletal underbites involving significant jaw discrepancy may require orthognathic (jaw) surgery, which is outside the scope of Invisalign alone.
